The last hard coal mines in the Ruhr area were closed at the end of 2018. Hard coal combustion is part of German history.<\/p>\n

So is the hard coal phase-out complete? The raw materials take the same route as the profits \u2013 to the Global North, to countries like Germany and the Netherlands. In return, environmental destruction is outsourced to the mining regions. For over 500 years, rich Western industrial nations and corporations have been benefiting from these conditions: They systematically exploit the resources and labour of predominantly former colonial countries, thereby exacerbating social and ecological crises, driving previously subsistent people into dependence on wage labour and accelerating climate change.<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=“3.27.4″ text_font=“||||||||“ header_2_font=“||||||||“ _i=“3″ _address=“5.2.0.3″]

People in the Global South are already suffering the most from the effects of the climate catastrophe \u2013 because they lack the material possibilities to adapt to the consequences of climate change and to limit the direct damage.
